Ergonomics

Built for the Body

For over 20 years, we've studied how the body sits, moves, and rests-then built chairs that follow. Not just the expensive ones. Every chair we make.

Why Ergonomics Matters

When you sit for hours, your body pays the price. The average office worker sits 6-8 hours a day. Most of that time, they're in a chair that wasn't designed for a human body to seat on. The result?

• Back pain , The No. 1 Workplace Health Issue Worldwide

• Neck stiffness from screens held at the wrong angle
• Fatigue that quietly kills focus and output
• Poor circulation from pressure in all the wrong places

A bad chair doesn't just hurt people. It affects your business achievements-through sick days, low energy, and constant complaints. A good chair changes all of that. And it starts with understanding the body.

Where Ordinary Chairs Fall Short

Most chairs aren't bad because they're cheap. They're bad because they were never designed for a body. A flat board, a thin cushion, a spring that locks in one place - that's furniture, not ergonomics. Here's what happens when a chair ignores how you're built:

Flat, Hard Backrest
Lower back loses its curve → disc pressure, muscle fatigue, the ache you feel at 3 PM
Fixed, Locking Tilt
Body fights the chair to shift position → stiffness, poor circulation, restlessness
Thin, Low-Grade Foam
Flattens in months → weight drops onto soft tissue and thighs → numbness, "dead leg"
One Size, Zero Adjust
Arms, shoulders, neck all strain to fit the chair instead of the chair fitting you
Mystery Materials
Heat trapped, sweat buildup, skin irritation; fails retail safety checks
Ergonomic In Name Only
Looks the part, but no testing behind the claim - comfort fades, parts fail

Six Factors in Ergonomic Chairs

At MSDA, we've spent years studying the relationship between people and their chairs. We've boiled it down to six core factors that make the difference between a chair that just sits there and one that truly supports.

01. Size

One size does not fit all. People come in different heights, weights, and body types. We design our chairs in right sizes, so the seat depth, backrest height, and armrest span all play a role in making sure the chair fits the person.

02. Shape

The human spine isn't a straight line. It has a natural S-curve that needs proper support. A chair's shape should follow that curve, not fight against it. Our backrests are contoured to match the spine's natural alignment. The lumbar region gets extra support where it's needed most.

03. Proportion

A chair isn't just a collection of parts-it's a system. The proportions between the seat, backrest, armrests, and base matter. If one part is out of balance, the whole chair feels wrong. We carefully balance proportions so the chair looks good and works well. The seat height relative to the backrest, the armrest width in relation to the seat, the tilt angle compared to the base-everything is tuned to create a chair that feels natural and stable.

04. Shape

Adjustment is a very important complement factor to size, to fit users of different heights. Nobody stays in one position for hours on end. Postures shift depending on what you're doing-leaning in to read, leaning back to think, shifting around during a long call. Our chairs come with multiple adjustment points-seat height, backrest angle, armrest position, headrest height, lumbar depth, and tilt tension. These aren't just extra features; they're essential tools for staying comfortable through a long workday.

05. Deformation

A chair that doesn't give at all feels like sitting on concrete. The right amount of deformation-how the materials respond to pressure-is what makes a chair truly comfortable. Different materials behave in different ways. The metal and plywood don't bend much, but they do provide a subtle, springy feel-especially noticeable on cantilever chairs and plywood shell designs.

The plastic structure adds a bit of dynamic movement, responding to your shifts. And the mesh and foam do the heavy lifting, evenly spreading your body weight to reduce pressure points. We also use different foam densities in different parts of the chair. The seat cushion is firm enough to support, yet soft enough to relieve pressure. The backrest gives slightly to conform to your shape but doesn't collapse. This careful control of deformation is what creates that "just right" feeling.

06. Interaction

A chair doesn't exist in isolation. It interacts with the user, the desk, the floor, and the environment. How the chair moves with the person-leaning back, swiveling, rolling-affects the whole experience. We design our chairs to move naturally with the user. The tilt mechanism follows your body's motion, the casters roll smoothly without scratching floors, and the armrests support your arms when you type. It's about creating a seamless interaction between the chair and the person sitting in it.

The Bottom Line
These six factors aren't just design principles-they're the foundation of every chair we make at MSDA. When size, shape, proportion, adjustment, deformation, and interaction all come together, you get a chair that doesn't just hold you up. It works with you, supports you, and helps you do your best work.

How We Think About our Chairs

Most chair makers start with the chair. We start with the body.

Body First, Chair Second.
Before we draw a single line, we study the body. Spine geometry. Pressure zones. How people actually sit-not how textbooks say they should. The chair is just the answer to the body's question.
Movement Is the Design, Not a Feature.
We don't add "tilt" to a finished chair. We build the whole mechanism around how your body shifts weight. Tilt, recline, armrest pivot, lumbar flex-they're one connected system, not a list of buttons.
If You Can't Test It, You Can't Claim It.
A lot of chairs say "ergonomic." Few can prove it. We built one of the industry's most complete testing centers-BIFMA-grade equipment, pressure mapping, cycle testing-because comfort should be measured, not just felt.
Build It to Last, Not to Sell
We give a 10-year warranty on every core structural component. Not because it sounds good in a brochure -because we test to BIFMA 5.1 standards and we know the numbers. "A good chair will last ten years" isn't a slogan. It's a spec.

Our R&D Process

Built Through Iteration, Not Impatience A good chair isn't designed once. It's designed again, and again, and again - until the body and the data agree. We don't ship the first sample. Behind every chair that leaves our factory is a line of prototypes that didn't - each one teaching us what to fix.

1
• First Sample
Does it fit the body? We pressure-map the seat, check lumbar contact height, and photograph seated posture. Most first samples fail. That's the point.
2
• Refining the Curves Adjust the shape.
Lumbar height and curve radius, backrest width, seat pan contour, waterfall edge. A few millimeters separate "okay" from "right."
3
• Mechanism Tune the Movement.
Tilt ratio, tension spring rate, armrest pivot, recline locks. The chair must follow you-not push you. Feel + measurement together.
4
• Material Validate the Build.
Foam density and resilience. Mesh tension and airflow. Upholstery formaldehyde and skin safety. Frame welds. Where it earns certifications.
5
• Break Test Push It to Failure.
Static load, cycle testing, caster rolling, armrest leverage, backrest impact. We don't just pass BIFMA -we find how far past it we go.
6
• Sign-off Sample Becomes Product.
Comfort scores from real sitters. Pressure maps in spec. BIFMA numbers in hand. Only when body and data both say yes.
We'd Rather Make Ten Samples and Ship One Perfect Chair Than Make One Sample and Ship Ten Problems.
Every round costs time and money. We pay it willingly - because a chair that skips this process is the chair your customer returns in six months.

The Science, Made Simple

You don't need a biology degree to sit well. Here's what matters-in plain English.

Your spine has a natural S-shape-keep it that way.

Your spine curves inward at the lower back, outward at the mid-back, and inward again at the neck. When the lower curve flattens - the moment you slouch - your discs take more pressure and your muscles work overtime. That's where pain starts.

What we do:

Every MSDA chair is shaped to hold the lumbar curve in place, so your spine stays in its natural S - upright, reclined, or anywhere between.

Your body is always moving - even when you think you're still.

Research shows people shift their torso about 53 times an hour - nearly once a minute. You lean in to focus, recline to think, turn to talk. A chair that locks you into one position is fighting your body.

What we do:

Our synchronous tilt mechanism links the seat and backrest so they move together at the right ratio. Your feet stay on the floor, your back never loses contact, and the chair follows - not leads.

Your weight should sit on your bones, not your muscles.

Body weight should rest on the "sitting bones" - the parts of your pelvis built to carry load. When a seat is the wrong shape, weight shifts to soft tissue, compressing blood vessels and causing that numb, achy feeling.

What we do:

Our seat pans use high-density foam (95% resilience - it springs back, year after year) shaped to channel weight to the right places. We pressure-map our designs to confirm it.

No two bodies are the same - so adjustability isn't optional.

People come in every height, weight, and proportion. Forcing one body into another's "ergonomic" chair creates new problems. Real ergonomics means the chair adapts: seat height, depth, lumbar, armrests, headrest, tilt tension.

What we do:

From our entry-level mesh chair to our executive leather, every model carries the adjustments that matter - because a chair that can't fit your body can't be called ergonomic.
